Sounds like an adult tried to explain to some children that the American flag means different things to different people and then the children had a little tantrum.
The flag is a symbol. The meaning of the symbol, just like the country itself, is constantly changing. At the very least, our feelings about the flag reflect our feelings about the current ruling people and parties.
So - Fuck the flag. Or worship it. Whatever. Just no more acting all confused/surprised/hurt when other people don't feel the way you do.
PS A decade ago, I was in this exact frat at Stanford. In 2008, some of us put Obama stuff in our windows. :)
