I feel for Glynnis, as this article is painful to read! Wow, it must be annoying to come up against such narrow mindedness and prejudice. I’m always amazed that there is still a continuous “hangover” of the idea of someone being “weird” if they are single and without children. I remember it so well when I was growing up, the youngest of 5 sisters. Back then, parents didn’t even think it necessary to send their girls to college! It was assumed they would get married and be provided for. Luckily, my father saw the value in education and we all had the choice to go. Four of us went, the other worked and moved up the ladder to a managerial position. We all had children but one sister. And she, too, loves her life. Luckily, she is surrounded by family and friends who love and support her, never for a moment thinking she is weird for her decision. But most importantly, she doesn’t think herself weird or second guess her decision. I hope Glynnis stops feeling the need to defend herself. Stand firm in your truth and F*** the rest.

This is dangerous writing. And not because the topic is scary and personal. But because even if it sounds extraordinarily believable, the idiots will pipe up, say something like what I’m thinking right now, but without taking enough time to listen FIRST: “Men too feel like we need the words “husband” and “baby” to act as a special lemon juice squeezed over our lives in order to make ourselves visible.” And, compounding the problem, Glynnis can never, under any circumstance, change her mind. We’ll literally spear her.

Reading is the path to empathy which, in turn, is the path to people doing - sleeping with, making babies with, not making babies with - whoever the hell they want whenever the hell they want. Maybe, at least. Regardless, reading makes us free.
