Amazon would have been a gigantic change to the neighborhoods they proposed to move into. I don't understand why they pulled out after a little opposition... Does everyone have to bow down to the almighty amazon or be punished? Seems like a little compromise could have been in order.
This will be a great talking point for republicans in 2020... Obviously Jeff Bezos knew that.
I definitely get why people were angry about the billions in tax breaks offered to Amazon but scaring them off also seems short sighted. I wonder if any of the politicians involved actually expected or wanted Amazon to back out or if they thought they could just grandstand without any repercussions.
I’m especially confused by the calls for the workers in the campus to be able to unionize. All the tradespeople would be union as would the service employees. Programmers and management don’t unionize anywhere so it seemed like a strange sticking point. It sounded like some of the politicians thought they were opening a warehouse instead of a corporate HQ.
Regardless I did find the whole spectacle of Amazon choosing their new home pretty grotesque. I don’t understand how cities can legally provide tax breaks and incentives to certain companies. What happened to equal protection under the law? Also shouldn’t these cities strive to provide an attractive business environment for all employers, not just the largest ones?

New York advertises on tv nightly-“ invest in NY State with no taxes for 10 years” I guess they were just kidding.
The democrats in nyc just screwed themselves out of 25 thousand jobs! How is that going to look in 2020!
